NEW YORK (AP) — The clock is ticking. As the deadline to reach a new contract nears, a potential UPS strike feels closer than ever.Negotiations broke down earlier this month and unionized workers have been holding rallies and practice pickets across the country. The Teamsters, which represent more than half of the company’s workforce, will resume talks with UPS on Tuesday. That leaves less than a week to come to an agreement before the current contract expires on Monday, July 31. The union has authorized a strike and Sean M. O’Brien, a fiery leader elected last year to lead the union, has vowed to do so if their demands aren’t met. “We’re sending a message… all 340,000 of our members are united and ready to fight,” O’Brien told The Associated Press at a practice picket Friday in Atlanta, where UPS is based. UPS’s unionized workers still seethe about a contract they feel was forced on them in 2018, and say that the company delivers millions more packages...

The Bellevue House, the former home of Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald for parts of the 1940s, has a new proposed management plan that seeks to adopt an “evolving understanding” of Sir John. A’s legacy alongside the site’s restoration, and to increase the involvement of the site in community events. Acting Superintendent for National Historic Sites in Eastern and Central Ontario Valerie Martin says Bellevue House formerly had a significant focus on the achievements of Canada’s first Prime Minister, while the new management plan seeks to explore different perspectives on Macdonald’s complex legacy and paint a more complete picture.“The former management plan really spoke to raising awareness about the achievements of Sir John. Fire suppression system goes off at Allston gas station

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 06:35:08 GMT

A fire suppression system went off at a gas station in Allston Friday afternoon, causing a cover of white powder over the Shell station’s parking lot and gas pumps. The Shell gas station on the corner of North Harvard and Cambridge Streets in Allston was covered in the suppressant, which is a baking soda mixture, after the system was triggered.Crews are investigating why the system was triggered. Heat normally sets off the fire suppression system, and this system was inspected in April. Crews said an ambulance was at the scene to address the side effects of sneezing and coughing from the suppressant, but no injuries were reported. The gas station needs a working suppression system to safely reopen, and repairs could possibly delay the reopening to Monday.
