Read more Letters to the Editor.Bill offers real helpon homelessnessTo address California’s homelessness crisis, The Homelessness Prevention Act, SB 567, is a critical step toward allowing more Californians than ever to have access to affordable housing.SB 567 would expand tenant protections to previously excluded groups and afford protection to renters, safeguarding them from exposure to predatory renting practices. The bill would close loopholes, prevent no-fault evictions and allow for accountability and enforcement of the rules, greatly needed in a market that has seen massive exploitation. The Homelessness Prevention Act is an overdue response to the reality that millions of California renters face each and every day.It has been three uncertain years, but as we emerge from the pandemic, it is paramount that we do not allow landlords to exploit the instability created by this unprecedented event. Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 19:03:04 GMT

Contra Costa County’s homeless population ticked up just 4% over the past three years to around 2,300 people, according to new data showing homelessness did not surge during the pandemic despite widespread job losses. But the latest numbers from the county’s annual “point-in-time” count in January appear to contradict the results of its 2022 count, which found the number of unhoused residents soared 35% to more than 3,000 people. Now, officials say last year’s count is unreliable because of “significant inconsistencies” in the data. The county health department blamed a third-party contractor for the errors but declined to immediately provide more details about any problems with the dataset. The department maintained it can “verify the accuracy of all other point-in-time counts,” which it said were conducted by the county.Officials acknowledge that homeless counts — taken annually or every two years to understand how many peo...

Davila had ordered Holmes to surrender to federal prison authorities on April 27 of this year, but that order was automatically suspended while the higher court decided whether to grant the bail request. It will be up to Davila to set a new surrender date for Holmes no...
