Isaiah Stevens scores 18, No. 17 CSU Rams shrug off slow start to beat CSU-Pueblo

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:23:03 GMT

FORT COLLINS — Isaiah Stevens had 18 points to move closer to taking over as the program’s all-time leading scorer and No. 17 Colorado State shook off a sluggish start to roll past Division II CSU-Pueblo 86-54 on Sunday night. The Rams (10-1) returned to the court eight days after a 64-61 home loss to Saint Mary’s. They looked a touch lethargic early on but quickly found their rhythm, using a 20-2 run midway through the first half to break free of CSU-Pueblo.“It wasn’t a work of art,” Colorado State coach Niko Medved said. “But we also did some good things.” Stevens’ smooth shooting moved him 14 points away from breaking the school’s scoring mark on the men’s side held by Pat Durham, who amassed 1,980 points from 1985-89. Basketball Hall of Famer Becky Hammon has Colorado State’s all-time career record of 2,740 points.“The thing about (Stevens) is he appreciates those things a lot,” Medved said of school records. “But he’s also got the wisdom to know he’ll appreciate it a heck ...

Fire officials warn of these dangers during holiday season

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:23:03 GMT

While the winter holiday season is filled with bright and beautiful decorations, fire offials are warning people that many of the popular ornaments like candles, lights, wreaths and Christmas trees can be potential fire hazards if not handled properly.  “People’s always think ‘It’s not going to happen to me,’ but if you’re careless with it, it’s just a matter of time before it happens,” Capt. Jeremy Frazier with the Glendale Fire Department told KTLA photojournalist Phil Ige.  Frazier added that there are at a least few Christmas tree fires in the city of Glendale every year, which is why the department decided to hold a demonstration of how easily the festive trees can go up in flames, especially if they are not watered properly.“Once you start to see flames in a tree, typically a dryer tree will be consumed in less than 60 seconds,” he said.  Officials with the Glendale Fire Department held a demonstration of how quickly a dry Christmas tree can catch fire in the ho...

49ers’ biggest win? Avoiding disastrous injuries to McCaffrey, Purdy and Bosa

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:23:03 GMT

You want to crown the 49ers, go ahead. They won another NFC West title, and home field advantage throughout the playoffs and their first Super Bowl championship since 1995 are within reach. They’re 11-3, winners of six straight and the team to beat in the NFC.Yet within a 45-29 road win against the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, the fickle nature of football and how things can go sideways, simply because of the nature of the sport, were on full display. The 49ers may well be the best team in the NFL, but that can change in an instant. There will be some hand-wringing over allowing Arizona 234 yards rushing, the highest total surrendered in 113 games (including the postseason), but the 49ers were without starting defensive tackles Arik Armstead and Javon Hargrave. Plus, there were some tackling issues by some of their best players, inside linebacker Fred Warner included. But run defense hasn’t been a problem and likely won’t be a big one going forward, although the Baltimo...

Kurtenbach: One drive perfectly explains why Brock Purdy is the NFL’s improbable but undeniable MVP

Published Tue, 25 Feb 2025 03:23:03 GMT

Brock Purdy wiped his hands on his towel, licked his fingers, and scanned the field in front of him.And when he looked to his right, he muttered something that was anything but positive and likely not printable.Amid a surprisingly tight game against the Cardinals in Arizona, the heavily favored Niners faced third-and-11 from deep inside their own territory on the first drive of the second half. And unbeknownst to anyone but Purdy — and perhaps unbeknownst to the Niners’ quarterback too — he was about to make back-to-back plays that perfectly explain why the 49ers are the NFL’s team to beat and why the second-year quarterback who was once the last pick in the NFL Draft is the favorite to win MVP.Purdy was muttering because the Cardinals had put seven defenders on the line of scrimmage for the play. Arizona was coming for the Niners’ 6-foot-1 quarterback with a blitz, and there wasn’t much he could do to stop it.It turns out that it was the Cardinals who were in...

Fatal SoCal plane crash involved 'experimental homebuilt' aircraft, feds say

(KTLA) -- Authorities with the National Transportation Safety Board announced on Sunday that a single-engine plane that crashed Saturday, killing one person aboard, was an “experimental homebuilt vans RV-8" aircraft.  Watch video of the scene on KRON4 sister station KTLA's website. The crash occurred around noon near the intersection of Auburndale and West Rincon streets, the Corona Fire Department tweeted on X, formerly Twitter. Video of the scene captured by independent news agency OnSceneTV showed the plane collided with a tree. The crash sparked a small vegetation fire that was extinguished, fire officials said.  An investigator with NTSB arrived at the site Sunday morning and began the process of documenting the scene and examining the aircraft, federal officials confirmed to KTLA via email. The investigation into the crash, according to NTSB, will focus on the pilot, aircraft itself and the “operating environment.” Investigators will look at the following in...

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — On the second play of the second half, Cooper Kupp found himself running completely alone down the Commanders’ sideline behind their NFL-worst pass defense.Matthew Stafford still nearly overthrew his wide-open target, but Kupp made a fingertip catch to score the key touchdown Sunday for the Los Angeles Rams, who have grabbed almost every opportunity they’ve had over the past five weeks.“Apparently a miscommunication over there, and we were able to get an easy one — as easy as Matthew is willing to make it,” Kupp said with a grin.Stafford passed for 258 yards and hit Kupp and Demarcus Robinson for touchdowns, and the Rams hung on for a 28-20 victory over freefalling Washington.Kyren Williams overcame the first two lost fumbles of his NFL career to rush for 152 yards and a touchdown for the Rams (7-7), while Kupp’s eight receptions for 111 yards were highlighted by that 62-yard catch. With a late defensive stand that shut down Washington’...

San Francisco’s Moody stretches extra point streak to record 53 straight

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jake Moody missed an extra-point attempt in sixth grade and it bothered him even after a photo showed the ball teed up sideways.San Francisco’s kicker hasn’t missed since.By hitting all six of his extra point kicks in the 49ers’ 45-29 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, Moody has made 53 straight PATs — the most since the NFL moved the kick back to the 15-yard line in 2015.“I mean, it’s good — it’s what I’m shooting for,” Moody said. “But that’s my job, obviously, not trying to miss any. If I can keep that going, hit lots of extra points every game, that usually means we’re winning, so hopefully we keep that up.”The Niners raised a few eyebrows by using a third-round pick on Moody at this year’s NFL draft, making him the first kicker drafted within the first three rounds since Tampa Bay took Roberto Aguayo in the second in 2016.Despite being hampered by a quadriceps injury late in preseason camp, Moody got his rookie season off to...
