The Smith River wildfire complex has passed 70,000 acres, and over the weekend the fire approached the edge of the evacuated community of Gasquet. There is no containment yet of the main fire — the merged Kelly/Holiday fire — although secured lines on smaller fires brought the containment figure for the complex to 6% on Monday, Aug. 28, said fire managers for the U.S. Forest Service. The area was at 70,716 acres (110 square miles).Burning operations and bulldozer lines are expected to keep the flames from residences in Gasquet’s North Fork area, the fire managers said.Twenty miles to the southeast, the Elliot and Swillup fires of the Happy Camp Complex merged over the weekend. On Monday, they accounted for 7,877 acres of that complex’s 19,205 (30 square miles). Containment was 2% for the merged fire now called Elliot and 35% for the complex’s Head Fire, near Scott Bar.The Smith River and Happy Camp fires started during lightning storms on Aug. 15-16. (BCN) -- Firefighters successfully extinguished a Daly City house fire early Sunday, according to the North County Fire Authority. The home allegedly had unpermitted electrical wiring and lighting fixture installations, and was being used for an illegal cannabis cultivation operation, fire officials said. At 2:36 a.m., firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at 529 Gellert Blvd. Fire officials noticed heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of a two-story home. No injuries were reported and no occupants were found inside the home during a search and rescue operation, said fire officials. Fire officials said they prevented the fire from spreading to nearby structures by using hose lines, but the blaze did cause major damage to the second story of the home. The Daly City Police Department said it will investigate the cannabis cultivation operation. Copyright © 2023 Bay City News, Inc.San Jose airport welcomes Beyoncé’s 'BeyHive' ahead of show Wednesday

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — LSU coach Brian Kelly sounds confident that Alabama transfer Aaron Anderson can transform the fifth-ranked Tigers’ return game from a turnover-prone liability into a game-breaking asset.“He’s pretty dynamic,” Kelly said Monday. “It’s just a different look back there.”Anderson, a receiver from New Orleans, was named LSU’s primary returner on Monday as the Tigers prepared to face No. 8 Florida State in Orlando this Sunday night. It’s a rematch of a season-opener last year that saw special teams blunders by LSU — including two muffed punts — play a pivotal role in a 24-23 FSU victory that was decided on a missed extra point after the Tigers had scored a potential tying touchdown at the end of regulation. The rematch is “going to come down to the execution of the littlest things, and as you guys know, it came down to that the last time we played,” Kelly said. “Fielding the football cleanly, executing extra points — all those things mat...Police say deadly Montreal fire in March is now being criminally investigated

MONTREAL (AP) — A fire in March that killed seven people in a heritage building in Old Montreal has turned into a criminal investigation, Canadian police said Monday.Montreal police Insp. David Shane said traces of fire accelerants were found at the site, which can help explain why the flames spread so quickly. He said experts have found out where the fire started, and have ruled out an accidental cause.Seven people died in the March 16 blaze, including a long-term resident of the building, and six people who were staying in short-term rentals.Inspectors had reported multiple fire code violations during visits in the years leading up to the fire in the building.Shane said a coroner’s inquest into the deaths has been suspended while the criminal investigation follows its course.Montreal’s mayor vowed earlier this year to tighten regulation of Airbnb after the fire. It included Airbnb units in a historic city section where they are banned.SourceMan dies after a driver and biker group exchange gunfire in road rage dispute near Independence Hall
