AI Tries (and Fails) to Detect Weapons in Schools

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 20:45:53 GMT

On Halloween day last year, a 17-year-old-student walked straight through an artificial intelligence weapons detection system at Proctor High School in Utica, New York. No alert went off.The 17-year-old then approached a fellow student, pulled a hunting-style knife out of his backpack, and repeatedly stabbed the other student in the hands and back. The Utica City School District had installed the $4 million weapons detection system across 13 of its schools earlier that summer, mostly with public funds. The scanners, from Massachusetts-based Evolv Technology, look like metal detectors but scan for “signatures” for “all the guns, all the bombs, and all the large tactical knives” in the world, Evolv’s CEO Peter George has repeatedly claimed. In Utica, the 17-year-old’s weapon wasn’t the first knife, or gun, to bypass the system. Earlier that month, at a parents’ night, a law enforcement officer had walked through the system twice with his service revolver and was puzzled to find it...

Down 3-0, Leafs’ Big 4 seeking breakthrough versus Panthers

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 20:45:53 GMT

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — It was almost automatic in every game this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Either Mitch Marner, William Nylander, Auston Matthews or John Tavares was going to score a goal. That was the case, anyway — until the Eastern Conference semifinals.Three games against the Florida Panthers in this series, and that fearsome foursome has been blanked so far. After scoring at least once in 81 of Toronto’s 88 games this season entering this series, Marner, Nylander, Matthews and Tavares have combined for exactly zero goals so far in their matchup with the Panthers.“Bobrovsky,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice said, offering the simplest and most accurate explanation. “That would be the end of that answer.”That would be Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who has stopped everything they’ve thrown at him. Matthews has gotten 14 shots at Bobrovsky in the first three games. So has Nylander. Tavares has gotten 12 to the net. Marner has taken nine. That’s 49 shots on goal in all — and ...

Want a better price on a used vehicle? Buy one with repaired minor damage

Consumers shopping for a used vehicle can probably save a little money buying a vehicle with previously repaired minor damage, compared to the same vehicle without any past damage.A vehicle history report will show any and all recorded collisions and repairs. Most buyers check vehicle history reports before buying. Dealers know you know, and they price those vehicles accordingly.“Amongst car shoppers, damage to the vehicle is, right after price, their No. 1 concern. So they know it is a concern for buyers, so they are willing to discount by a certain amount because they know shoppers will cast a skeptical eye on it,” said Patrick Olsen, editor-in-chief at Carfax.Carfax history reports are free and available instantly online. It is key to note these are vehicles with minor damage that has been properly and professionally repaired. And the savings is not all that much.“It is typically for minor damage in the hundreds of dollars. But I will say in a market where used v...

Searches for home listings outside of a homebuyer’s current metropolitan area surged in 2020 and 2021, with remote workers taking advantage of low mortgage rates to move to less expensive cites, and, while the trend has slowed, out-of-town searches are still a big part of house hunters.According to Redfin, and based only on searches through its site and those of its agents, house hunters moving to a new area made up 25.1% of searches in the first quarter. PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Postal carriers have more worries than snow, rain or the gloom of night keeping them from their appointed rounds. They’re increasingly being robbed, often at gunpoint, from Maine to California. Robberies of postal carriers have exploded, surging 78% to nearly 500 in 2022, according to data provided by U.S. Postal Inspection Service to The Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act. Letter carriers are demanding action from the U.S. Postal Service.“The National Association of Letter Carriers is outraged and angered by the assaults, armed robberies and even murders that America’s letter carriers increasingly face as they deliver the mail. These attacks are completely unacceptable,” said Paul Barner, the union’s executive vice president. The Postal Service said it’s adapting and implementing new measures to address the robberies, which are taking a toll on letter carriers tasked with delivering about 162.1 million pieces of first-class mail each d...
